Rook Endgame Positions

Explore pure rook endgame positions from real Lichess games — both sides have rooks but no queens or minor pieces. The most common endgame type in chess and the foundation of endgame technique.

About this pattern

Rook endgames are the most frequently occurring endgame type in chess, arising in roughly half of all games that reach an endgame. They require precise technique — understanding of active vs passive rooks, the Lucena and Philidor positions, and cut-off techniques. This search finds pure rook endgames: both sides have rooks (and pawns and king), with no queens or minor pieces remaining.
