Stonewall Defense Pawn Formation

Find positions with the Stonewall pawn formation as Black (d5-e6-f5). The mirror of the Stonewall Attack — solid central grip with a strong e4 outpost.

About this pattern

The Stonewall as Black (pawns on d5, e6, and f5) is the mirror image of the Stonewall Attack: a solid central pawn grip that anchors a knight on e4 and provides kingside attacking chances. The chronic weakness is the e5 square and the c8 bishop's mobility — the bishop is famously hard to develop, often rerouted via b8-d7-f8-h6 or through ...b6 and ...Bb7. Found in the Dutch Defense and certain Slav/Triangle systems.
