Back Rank Weakness Positions

Find chess positions with back rank weakness — the king trapped behind its own pawns. Study how masters exploit and avoid back rank mate threats.

About this pattern

The back rank weakness occurs when a king is trapped on the first rank by its own pawns, with no escape square. This makes the king vulnerable to a back rank mate — a rook or queen delivering checkmate on the 8th (or 1st) rank. Recognizing and exploiting back rank weakness is one of the most common tactical themes in chess. This search finds positions where Black's king is locked behind f7-g7-h7 pawns with no escape on f8 or h8.
