Opposite-colored bishop endgames are famous for their drawing tendencies. When each side has a bishop that operates on different colored squares, they can never directly contest each other. This means the defender can often create an impenetrable blockade on their bishop's color. Even two extra pawns may not be enough to win. However, in middlegames with other pieces, opposite-colored bishops favor the attacker who can target squares the defender's bishop cannot cover.
